Widely regarded as the greatest competitor jiu-jitsu has produced. The son of coral belt Mauricio Gomes and grandson of Carlos Gracie, Roger Gracie built a record that still has no equal: ten IBJJF world titles across multiple weight classes, taken every year from 2004 to 2010, and the first man to win the open weight division three times.
He is a two-time European Champion and a Pan Champion, and at ADCC he holds weight, absolute and superfight gold — the only athlete to win both his weight class and the open division with a one hundred per cent submission rate.
He retired from competition in 2017 after beating the reigning world champion Marcus Buchecha, and left the sport without a single submission defeat on his record. He is in both the IBJJF and ADCC Halls of Fame, and teaches from the Roger Gracie Academy in Hammersmith.
I never chased the finish. I chased the position, and the finish came.
