Owen Livesey takes on the Middleweight Grand Prix and a chance for 20k
Posted by James Tighe onPolaris is one of the longest running and most professional Jiu Jitsu shows in the world returning on November 5th in Southampton. Polaris 22 promises to be one of the best events in recent memory. Already announced is a superfight between UFC and MMA legend Carlos Condit and Ashley Williams. Williams has been on an absolute tear of late, recently competing at the latest ADCC event. The Welsh born black belt has been at the top of the lighter divisions for years, recently he has won matches against the likes of Paulo Miyao, Keith Krikorian, Robert Degle and Thomas Halpin. It is exciting to see Carlos getting more into the grappling mix after one of the most successful UFC welterweight careers of all time. Both grapplers have complete styles, it will be interesting to see how Ash approaches this match. A skilled leg locker with incredible pressure passing from the top, he could look for the takedown and work from the top position or go to guard and hunt for submissions.
The main feature of the evening is the Middleweight Grand Prix featuring some serious talent. Owen Livesey is one of the featured and favorite grapplers in the tournament. Coming off an incredible year of competition, he is hot off a win over Atos Jiu Jitsu’s Josh Hinger at the last Polaris installment. The Judo ace has firmly established himself as a fan favorite, bringing one of the most exciting styles the professional grappling circuit has seen in years ( if you don’t believe us just watch his match against Freddy from Polaris 19). It is rumored that Owen and Izaak Michell already have a gentlemen's agreement to keep it on its feet.
Izaak is another favored grappler to take home the 20k prize, the rising B-Team stud had an impressive showing at the ADDC including a wild scrap with the veteran Vagner Rocha. Just stepping into his prime, this event could turn into a coming out party for the Craig Jones trained athlete. Izaak’s former teammate and Danaher Death Squad member Oliver Taza will also be entering the competition. The Canadian leglocker now representing New Wave has been at the elite level of grappling for some time trading wins and loses against top competition. The tournament represents an opportunity to showcase his skills and improvements now that he has a few years competing at the highest level.
UK’s Jed Hue will also be in the mix trying to cash in the 20k prize. Recently promoted to black belt by Ross Nicholas, Jed has been more active on the BJJ competition circuit. Primarily a leg lock specialist, he recently submitted UFC fighter Paul Craig in twenty one seconds. Competing out of Ireland, Shane Fishman and his “Fishnet” technique is a Darkhorse to go deep into the tournament. Hunter Colvin is another late addition to the tournament but will be seeking to make some noise. Finally, America ace Roberto Jimenez is seeking to show why he is considered one the top middleweights in the world today.
