BJJ Leeds

Jiu Jitsu in Leeds is growing at a fast pace, more and more academies are now running, many of them are full time academies. Some great competitors have come out of Leeds, showing some high level Leeds BJJ. In this article we go through some of the best Leeds Jiu Jitsu Academies. Jiu Jitsu in Leeds is certainly becoming a hotspot of BJJ in England.

Scramble Academy Leeds

Probably the prettiest academy not just in Leeds but in the whole of the UK, Scramble Academy Leeds is a relatively new academy however, in just a few short years it has grown to the point they have moved to much larger premises with its own chic Coffee shop. The coffee shop is a unique feature not only in the jiu jitsu leeds scene but, most places in the world! Make sure to leave time to grab a espresso nex time you pop in to the academy

The academy is run by 4 coaches, Liam Cann is the MMA/BJJ coach, a BJJ black belt who is also an accomplished competitor winning superfights on Polaris along with having MMA experience. He is an active member of the BJJ leeds community and the proper BJJ scene. One of the friendliest guys around as well! Fred Grenall is the Submission Wrestling/BJJ coach who is a BJJ European Champion in NoGi at Purple belt and Master 1 Brown Belt BJJ Gi European Champion,Michael Wood is a BJJ coach who is a brown belt and an experienced competitor. The Muay Thai programme is run by Marco Belahouane.
The club runs an extensive timetable with there being early bird classes being run, and BJJ/NoGi being offered every night along with many open mats. The gym is also open 7 days a week, with there being open mats available everyday. Other classes include kids classes and taster sessions on offer.
The academy itself is indicative of the growth of Leeds BJJ, with the facilities on offer showing how big martial arts have gotten, especially with Jiu Jitsu in Leeds.

Game fight Leeds

One of the closest academies to the city centre, Game Fight BJJ Leeds is run by BJJ black belt Mabsy Alam, under Vinicius Amaral. Game Fight BJJ runs classes every weekday morning and evening. With a well attended open mat on Sunday, classes on offer include Gi BJJ, Submission Wrestling and MMA Classes. The club also welcomes beginners with specific beginners focused classes in both BJJ and Submission Wrestling.

Gracie Barra Horsforth Leeds

No list is complete without a Gracie Barra, it seems the network of Gracie Barra is everywhere, with Gracie Barra helping progress Leeds BJJ. While Gracie Barra Horsforth is a bit further out of Leeds, we still class it as part of Jiu Jitsu in Leeds. The academy is run by one of the best UK and Gracie Barra athletes in Oliver Lovell, a  Black belt world BJJ medalist at the Abu Dhabi World Pro. In addition to Oliver, the academy also has two top brown belt assistant coaches who are competitors in their own right. One of the great things about Gracie Barra is the teaching schedule that most academies adhere to, with Gracie Barra HQ producing a top quality Brazilian Jiu Jitsu syllabus to be taught at all schools, holding to the core techniques and foundation movements of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so you can be sure you will be getting the best teaching.
The gym runs classes Monday to Saturday, with there being classes daytime and evening every weekday, with the gym offering Beginners classes, Gi, NoGi and Kids classes.

Asylum Vale Tudo (AVT) Leeds

A legendary academy in the UK MMA scene, AVT short for Asylum Vale Tudo is an academy based a short drive south of Leeds. The academy was founded by UFC veteran and UK MMA legend Danny ‘The Cheesecake Assassin’ Mitchell, Danny has fought all over the World and amassed an impressive fight record with over 100 fights, and more than 80 wins to his credit. With experience as a pro boxer, kickboxer and bare knuckle boxer he also holds a 2nd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and is well known for his submission skills after scoring the first submission via “Twister” in Bellator history. While Danny was the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu head coach for number of years, he recently promoted his right hand man Jay Furness to AVT’s head coach, being a previous training partner and cornerman for Mitchell. Jay is an experienced MMA fighter along with a BJJ black belt. The academy has a number of coaches with there being 3 other BJJ coaches who are all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black belts and a wrestling coach who has competed extensively on the wrestling mats. For those daring enough to take on the wrestling mat…

AVT has one of the busiest timetables of all Jiu Jitsu in leeds (perhaps in the UK), with over 40 classes taking place throughout the week. AVT is open 7 days a week, and there are grappling classes both in the daytime and evening. Wrestling and MMA is also on offer at AVT along with a range of Womens only classes throughout the week along with Kids classes being offered monday to friday. If you want to extend your training past BJJ and Grappling AVT offers quality striking whether its Boxing, Kickboxing or Muay Thai.

Senshi BJJ Leeds

A BJJ club in Bramley Leeds, the academy was formerly a member of the Gracie Barra family. The academy is now under Gordo JJ Europe and their chief instructor is Ben Poppleton, the academy's coaches are Professor Przemyslaw Martin Gorzala and Professor Dawid Polomka along with multiple brown belt assistant coaches.

Senshi has some great facilities with a 150 square foot mat (40mm 12lb foam – Judo standard), separate ladies and gents toilets and changing rooms, as well as a seated reception area. The academy also has a dedicated strength and conditioning area including kettlebells, free weights, gymnastic rings and a climbing rope. They also have a selection of striking pads, punch bags and other equipment which is free to use for all members.
The academy has classes Monday to Saturday with 2 early morning classes during the weekdays. Every weekday evening there is some form of Grappling going on, and the academy also offers BJJ for Children. A great place to train Jiu Jitsu in leads!

While of course this list is not exhaustive, these are five of the top Leeds BJJ academies. Keep your eye out for similar articles on the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene in the UK and other places around the world. Wishing you all the best out there on the mats!
